Press Release

The Experimental Stage was going on (off and on) from 1992 – 2006 and there were a number of revivals and anniversaries. Here’s a press release from the 12 anniversary show hosted by WSMU radio.

WSMU presents: Experimental Stage
12th Anniversary Night Thursday May 19th - 7PM
UMass Dartmouth Group 6 Room 153

Have a song you’re not sure about, but want to test out? Have a poem you’re dying to read? Have a story you need to tell? Have a third nostril you can flare? Come on over.
After lying dormant beneath the catacombs of UMD for the last couple of years, Experimental Stage is back for ONE night this May! Come participate in and/or witness the upcoming

12th anniversary of the weekly event that took the term “open mic night” to hitherto unexplored (and occasionally undesirable) realms.

When: Thursday May 19th from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PMish

Where: Group 6 (Visual and Performing Arts Building) - Room 153 (the big lecture hall).

What: Experimental Stage is sort of like an anything-goes “open mic.” Anyone is welcome to perform, or just come and watch. Stage provides a supportive environment for all performance artists, and encourages people to try out new “experimental” material.

Who: You - bands, actors, musicians, poets, writers, singers, jugglers, performance artists, storytellers, singers, circus freaks, standup comedians, painters, mentalists, contortionists, improvisers, creative souls. Come and do your thing.

Why: Because.

eXperimental Stage Facts:
• Started as an underground on-campus event in 1993. Stage was privately initiated by actor/poet Dave Ortiz. Improviser and performer Derek Breen opened the idea to other artists and started hosting Experimental Stage in various clandestine locations at UMD.
• Provided an open forum for creative artists and performers to express themselves.
• Featured local bands/musicians like Too Many Jens, Chris Haskell (of Rooftop Suicide Club), Chris Evil, Big Lick, The Javatones, and many more.
• Experimental Stage gleefully succeeded in raising the ire of “The Man” on several occasions.
• Featured acts such as former coordinator DJ Jedhel's “human blockhead” routine, DJ Jared Lord and Cowman's wacky antics, and Rebecca Paiva’s fangs of doom.
• Spawned the Rational Anarchist and Chux Kuzzin improv troupes.
• Presented several of Professor Jim Nee’s one-act plays.
• Presented Erin Packer’s production of “The Breakfast Club.”
• Presented popular cult movie nights
• Sometimes it rocked and sometimes it...er...didn't, but Experimental Stage was always a unique forum for artists of all kinds.

...Stay tuned for Experimental Stage’s official rebirth at an off-campus location near you...
